In de role of Field Application Engineer, with focus on speed/position sensors, we are looking for a colleague who can combine her/his technical expertise with a customer focused mindset to strengthen and expand Sensata’s position in the Industrial Automation market. The position is either based in Hengelo NL/Strasbourg FR or working from a home office and reporting into the European Business Center.
The role in this position is to technically support our customers with the design-in of our products in their systems and drive new product developments according to our customer’s needs. Within our Smart Factories segment this means that you partner with (big) OEMs and system integrators in Factory Automation and Process Automation industries and consult our products & technologies to provide sensor solutions.
Examples of markets where we are active in are material handling equipment, automated warehouses, packaging industry, plastic manufacturing, mining, industrial gasses, petrochemical and water/gas production and distribution. Customers we serve in this segment are such as plant engineering companies, forklift manufacturers, producers of power generation systems, processing line manufacturers and pneumatic & hydraulic equipment producers.
Responsible for the operational engineering and quality support for the Industrial product portfolio within Europe in several market areas. Understanding customer applications, initiating and maintaining relationships with customers, marketing & sales, customer services and operations. The FAE plays important roles, from supportive to project management, in business processes like:
Supporting customers (including distributors) and commercial team in selecting the right (standard) product for the customer application.
Identifying, justifying and launching projects for new product opportunities and/or product changes to realize customer solutions and growth of our business.
Supporting and advising in analyzing and solving technical customer complaints.
Global job description:
It will be the engineer’s prime role to be the interface to the customer’s or distributor’s technical organization in all aspects of the business.
Gathering information and building knowledge of applications and translate this in innovative product solutions.
Taking the lead in technical initiatives in close cooperation with marketing, sales, direct and indirect customers to generate new business opportunities for actual portfolio including the required business plan justifications (SWOT, Risk Analysis, NPV, etc).
Manage and/ or support product changes or projects in case of larger New Business Opportunities (NBO’s).
Stay informed on technical developments & trends and legislative matters (standards and approvals) potentially impacting applications and product portfolio.
Support product analysis and advising the customer in case of quality events to obtain sustainable solutions (8D, FMEA).
Analyzing and judging technical documentation like drawings and customer specifications.
Analyze competitor products on functional, quality and financial aspects.
Capable of translating technical input into convincing marketing communication material like application notes, data sheets, presentations, etc.
Experience of working with on IoT environment, preferably in a manufacturing setting
Understand systems flow, data source, data usage and sensors data streaming to IIoT platform
The position will be engaged in communication with the customers and Sensata’s product marketing and engineering for the improvement and delivery of the applications geared towards the industrial communications and data collection.
Ability to become the customer’s technology partner that will help them solve technology problems, improve reliability of machines , enable new capabilities of current products and demonstrate successful use cases and wins, etc.
Utilizes knowledge of engineering principles & practices in the design, development, analysis and release of products throughout the product life cycle
Act as key customer interface with an emphasis on technical problem solving. Support existing customers on new product development projects under development
Communicate business and technical information between the customer and Sensata
Develop and maintain an technical understanding of Sensata’s products and competitor product offerings
Key participant in failure analysis examinations and prepare Failure Analysis Reports of findings
Ensure projects meet customer requirements and quality standards
Creates design failure modes and effects analysis
Perform engineering analyses. Review product specifications and utilize computer aided engineering applications to apply conditions, replicate performance, and evaluate the manufacturability of products
Help develop and refine 'standard' product configurations that capitalize on the company's strengths and products. Provide onsite technical assistance to the sales team at industry trade shows and customer demonstrations
Negotiate technical specifications
Respond to requests for proposals and assist in the preparation of quotations for standard and custom products
Establish strong relationships with existing customer base at all levels; understand their business strategy and customer applications
Knowledge of basic electrical circuits, microelectronic assembly, statistical methods, process control fundamentals and product test processes
Familiarity with manufacturing methods welding, brazing, soldering, adhesive bonding, machining, stamping, molding and forming. Basic knowledge of a core manufacturing processes (Calibration, Final Function Transfer, leak testing, welding/soldering, adhesive and gel dispensing)
Establish and maintain customer engineering relations
Experience / Qualifications
A university degree and 2-4 years of experience (i.e. Bachelors degree) or a graduate degree and 0-2 years of experience (i.e. Masters degree)
Must be a team player able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing tasks and demands
Strong communication skills; oral, written and presentation
Strong organization, planning and time management skills to achieve results
Strong personal and professional ethical values and integrity
Holds self-accountable to achieving goals and standards
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
Strong interpersonal & collaboration skills to work effectively with all levels of the organization including suppliers and/or external customers
Project management, analytical and financial skills.
A background/expertise with speed/position sensors is a plus.
Good communication skills, verbally and in writing, in English and German
Pro-active attitude for continuously improving performance and a drive for results; customer focused and can-do mentality.
Able to manage people in different disciplines and regions.
Resilient in leveraging diversity between people in for example culture, knowledge and expertise.
