Sensata Technologies, Inc. Senior Director, Engineering in South Burlington, Vermont
The Senior Director of Engineering is responsible for all aspects of Dynapower’s production engineering, product line engineering, and research & development activities. Engineering disciplines include electrical engineering, embedded controls, and mechanical engineering as well as the tools incorporated to provide such design work product. They work closely with the other functional leaders in the company including those in Sales, Manufacturing, Human Resources, and Finance to achieve Dynapower’s strategic business plan with best-in-class operational efficiency. The Senior Director of Engineering delivers product designs to agreed specifications within time and budget constraints, fosters innovative solutions to meet customer needs, and provides day-to-day management of simultaneous complex projects. In addition, they provide leadership of product development activities while focusing on the structure and operation of the product development engineering function as a cohesive unit supporting Dynapower’s customers, sales organization, and strategic growth agenda.
The travel for this role will be about 50%.
Essential Functions
Leadership: Serve as a key member of the Dynapower Leadership Team that sets the company’s strategic direction. Lead all engineering staff throughout Dynapower. Direct and coordinate the work of the Engineering team to ensure that team members are working in a collaborative, efficient, and effective manner for internal and external customers so that our collective goals are achieved.
Company Culture: Become instrumental in driving departmental and companywide culture and fostering positive morale to ensure alignment with Dynapower’s value drivers including growth, customer satisfaction, and employee satisfaction.
People Development: Create a culture focused on managerial and people development. Ensure the Engineering leaders move from “players” to coaches” with a focus on overall talent development and accountability within the engineering organization. Oversee the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, retention, and development of engineering staff. Continually assess the capabilities and needs of the engineering team. Provide solid and effective leadership to ensure that engineering team members are developed, continuously motivated, and contribute at an optimal level.
Customer Focus & Innovation: Maintain the optimal application of technology, engineering, and innovation to meet product development and customer requirements in a timely and efficient manner. Collaborate with customers, end users sales management and, as needed, outside service providers to drive innovation and meet existing and future customer needs across each of the engineering focal areas, Production, R&D, and Applications.
New Product Development: Direct the development of new products and the modification to existing product lines including electrical, embedded control, and mechanical design features. Develop and ensure adherence to project timetables, unit cost targets, and development budgets. In collaboration with sales and operations implement formal processes to support the product/project development process. Ensure that the products/projects are fully and correctly defined and documented. Oversee efforts to apply specifications and regulatory requirements in product development and design. Ensure alignment with other departments and customers that all engineering requirements are properly defined and that appropriate expectations are established.
Operations: Maintain a close relationship with Manufacturing, Service, and Sales to support the activities essential to the completion of all projects, ongoing operational needs, production planning, and documentation requirements for all products. Participate in cost studies and make ROI recommendations. Review product designs and make recommendations for modifications based on customer needs, cost constraints, and knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes. Oversee the testing of all products to ensure they are compliant with all relevant safety requirements, specifications, and governmental regulations. Represent the company as a customer contact regarding significant technical matters.
Budgeting & Product Oversight: Managing the engineering department budget and all expenses. Coordinate all third-party consultants and outside services used for product design activities. Implement state-of-the-art tools and material resources to meet scheduled commitments and engineering efficiency best practices. Support cost, and preliminary design estimates for project-based sales opportunities including MIL-SPEC Defense Programs. Direct Production Engineering. Applications engineering and R&D to support all new and existing products including product applications, product quality, failure analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives. Develop and manage budgeting and budget execution with a focus on cost, quality, and expertise.
Acquisitions: Assist in the technical assessment of any corporate acquisitions (domestic and international), including due diligence and post-transaction integration of engineering resources.

Experience & Education Requirements
A minimum of fifteen years of progressive experience in the engineering, design, and manufacture of electrical power conversion systems. Experience in a wide variety of power conversion topologies over an extended power range including, AC/DC power supplies, inverters, and transformers. Experience with Defense programs is strongly preferred.
Experienced with project-based business is a must
Must have at least 10-12 years of experience in managing engineering teams with a demonstrated ability to coach and lead managers to successfully implement process changes throughout their organizations.
Must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering with an MSEE, PhD or MBA strongly preferred.
A high degree of technical expertise and learning agility to learn a technical product across multiple industries coupled with the ability to build highly effective working relationships with customers, colleagues, and team members.
Must possess a demonstrated track record of successfully driving new product design and development with a solid understanding of engineering technical issues/needs, manufacturing, financial, and sales ramifications.
Demonstrated success leading and implementing organizational restructuring initiatives such as redesigning reporting structures, redefining roles, and responsibilities, and creating and managing change to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness throughout the organization.
Must have strong engineering leadership experience in the power conversion business that encompasses staff development, planning and forecasting, innovation, and team building.

Demonstrated experience with Change Management strategies.
Experience designing, implementing, and managing Engineering team structures to support business needs.
Experience with process development to improve engineering and organization efficiency for a project and product-based business.
Must possess strong customer service, operational, and project management skills.
Strong professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to motivate teams to set and achieve high standards of performance. Ability to participate in and facilitate group or customer meetings.
Strong work ethic with strength in building and working with a Continuous Improvement team environment.
Experience with regulatory testing and approval processes.
Experience (or certification) in working with high-voltage equipment

Base Salary Range:
$207,429.00 - $285,214.60
