Sensata Technologies, Inc. Trade Compliance Manager- Asia in Shanghai, China
The Trade Compliance Manager is responsible for a regional export and import compliance program and holds regional policy authority.
Broad responsibility for Asian import and export compliance and training, primary sites in China and Malaysia, secondary sites Korea, Japan, India
Assist to implement trade regulations and automation for efficient trade flows e.g. China handbook and economic zones, Malaysia LMW, Korea bonded warehouse, duty/VAT management
Assume responsibility for Asia and global Harmonized Tariff System classification project in collaboration with outside service provider in Manila; implement accurate HTS database and testing/accountability for usage at sites
Work collaboratively with cross-functional process owners (e.g. Logistics, Planning, Finance), while maintaining independence and objectivity, to ensure effective internal compliance controls and procedures.
Perform transactional auditing of cross-functional processes and documents, report results, and prioritize improvement measures
Work integrally under the Global Trade Compliance Director’s oversight at US corporate headquarters to advise Asia senior management on trade compliance matters
Manage Trade Compliance Specialists, provide training and development in remote-reporting environment. Maintain strong indirect relationships with manufacturing sites
Analyze and interpret changing export and import regulations, tariffs and retaliatory responses, and regulatory changes in the Asia region
Analyze transactions for which due diligence indicates potential risk, and determine whether due diligence has been satisfied
Produce and analyze reports from various Enterprise Resource Planning/Manufacturing Resource Planning (ERP/MRP) and other information systems
Oversee calculations for preferential treatment under Free Trade Agreements
Oversee relationships with freight forwarders and customs brokers
Maintain the highest ethical standards, even when challenged from above, understand and live by Sensata’s ethics and business conduct policies
Other duties as may be assigned as needed based on changing industry requirements
Proficient with regional Customs Regulations (i.e. EU, China, Malaysia, Korea, Japan); working knowledge of US Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and ITAR regulations. Working knowledge of EU Dual-Use Regulations also helpful. Professional Trade Compliance certifications are desirable
Regulations pertinent to US headquartered corporations such as anti-boycott regulations and sanctions/embargoes administered by the US
Ability to work effectively with Global Trade Compliance Director in remote-reporting environment (Director at HQ near Boston, Massachusetts, US)
Strong computer skills including ability to research transactions and prepare reports in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) information systems (Specifically Oracle R.12), perform spreadsheet calculations, and quickly learn new software tools
Strong English (or ESL) verbal and written communication skills
Project leadership skills
Ability to work at both detail and strategic levels, work calmly under pressure and with frequent interruptions, and display sound judgment
Ability to prepare or revise procedures, work instructions, forms, and business flowcharts
Ability to prepare and review complex business documents
Thoroughly familiar with international shipping documents such as commercial invoice, packing list, air waybill, and export license; including consignee information, INCOTERMS, harmonized tariff system codes and nomenclature, country of origin, customs value, export classification, and license data
Thoroughly familiar with regional Value Added Tax (VAT) regulations and reporting

Education/Previous Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in business, law, engineering, or a related area or equivalent work experience.
At least ten years of business experience.
At least eight years of experience with export and/or import regulatory compliance; China / Malaysia experience preferred; regional role experience preferred.
At least two years’ experience in managerial role preferred
Experience with public accounting methods and/or trade compliance auditing (internal and external) strongly preferred.
Experience using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) information systems.
Experience with international business transactions and shipping documents.
Experience with trade compliance information systems.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Bilingual or multilingual, including English language.
- Must be available / willing to travel up to 15% - 25%, primarily Shanghai regional sites plus Malaysia and Manila; occasional travel to the US headquarters, Japan, Korea, India; some travel to other locations globally such as for key projects or training.
