Sensata Technologies, Inc. Assistant General Counsel, Patent and IP in Seattle, United States
We are seeking a strategic, business-minded and self-motivated IP attorney with an electrical or computer engineering background and 15 to 20 years of intellectual property experience to advise and serve as a trusted strategic partner to a variety of internal teams. This position will assist in managing the company’s intellectual property portfolio, including domestic and international patents, and will work closely with the company’s product development and business leadership teams..
This position reports directly to the Chief Legal Officer and is eligible for remote work.
Provide legal representation to the organization; support the work of the organization and direct the full range of legal strategies and responsibilities
Set the strategy and goals for the Legal team in alignment with the larger organizational goals
Lead complex legal projects that span legal, business, and functional boundaries (e.g., cross geographies, subject matter areas, and jurisdictions)
Provide counsel to staff in all departments on a variety of complex issues
Identify, research, and analyze legal issues that affect the organization and its activities at the local, state, federal and international levels associated with the organization’s activities
Develop and provide trainings on legal issues, processes and policies to multi-level audiences in all departments across the organization
Directs and oversees responsibilities of team to ensure priorities and deliverables are met
Provide advice and assistance on all matters relating to invention management and preparing patent applications on inventions
Monitor research and development activities for the identification of inventions and potential external claims for compensation
Review proposals and proposed statements of work to ascertain appropriate intellectual property provisions for inclusion in any resulting contract
Experience / Qualifications
A university degree and 10-12 years of experience
Ability to lead, coach, and develop team members
Holds self and others accountable to achieving goals and standards
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to handle multiple competing tasks and demands
Strong communication skills; oral, written and presentation
Strong organization, planning and time management skills to achieve results
Strong personal and professional ethical values and integrity
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
Strong interpersonal & collaboration skills to work effectively with all levels of the organization including suppliers and/or external customers
Leading or assisting in all areas related to the company’s global patent and trademark portfolio
Developing and executing an IP strategy that maximizes the successful achievement of the company’s business objectives while mitigating IP risk to the best extent possible
Ensuring that company patent filings and maintenance decisions are aligned with business strategy
Working closely with product development teams to ensure that sufficient ideas and Invention disclosures are generated; training and development of engineers on IP laws/requirements
Ensuring that patent filings are of high quality on commercially significant inventions by working with research and development, business managers and marketing
Overseeing the preparation of high-quality patent applications, efficiently advancing prosecution of pending patent applications, and managing global patent portfolio to ensure that meaningful protection aligned with business objectives is obtained
Working closely with product development teams to develop IP strategies using various types of IP to develop meaningful IP assets
Drafting and negotiating IP-related agreements as well as IP specific terms in other agreements
Working closely with other lawyers in addressing mixed intellectual property/general legal issues
Working with the company’s Patent Committee
Providing leadership and legal advice in areas of expertise
Managing, training and developing IP team
Using a range of tools and data sources to understand the internal and external IP environment
Collaborating with global legal colleagues and subject matters experts to advise the business on complex IP/legal issues that arise out of company’s global operations
Providing counsel and managing pre-litigation disputes and litigation involving the company’s IP
Supporting IP diligence in M&A
Managing outside counsel and vendors in all appropriate areas of coverage to provide legal services in a cost-effective manner within budgetary expectations
Assisting the legal department’s efforts in the preparation, implementation and refinement of forms, processes and procedures relevant to areas of coverage
Providing substantive support to other members of the legal department as needed
Performing other special assignments, strategic projects or duties as needed
Managing spend on IP matters to a budget aligned with business objectives and priorities
Additional Job Requirements:
J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school; with electrical or computer engineering degree
Significant experience in the areas of IIOT and wireless
In-depth knowledge of software and services business models, licensing, and contracting models
Considerable experience working with Open Source software
Demonstrated experience in wireless IP landscape including SEPs and patent pools
Significant experience successfully managing pre-litigation and litigation claims by non-practicing entities, large patent pools and industry competitors
Licensed to practice law and in good standing
15 or more years of intellectual property experience, including management of other attorneys
Developed sense of judgment, risk management skills and ability to balance business needs, regulatory obligations and reputational risks in an objective, practical way; demonstrated ability to both grasp the "big picture” and attend to details
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced business environment and drive complex projects to completion
Highly effective written and verbal communications skills; ability to communicate and relate at all levels of the organization
Experience in-house and at a top-tier law firm is preferred
Ability to handle substantial work volume and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Self-starter with a team spirit and an accountable working style
Significant experience with operational aspects of in-house legal practice including budgeting, forecasting, and process design and implementation
