Sensata Technologies, one of the world's leading suppliers of sensing, electrical protection, control and power management solutions, recently completed the acquisition of Spear Power Systems. The acquisition of Spear advances Sensata’s electrification portfolio and strategy into new clean energy markets and enables the Company to deliver more comprehensive energy storage solutions to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers in specialty transportation markets.

The Battery Management System (BMS) Systems Engineering Manager will lead a team of engineers to develop future BMS technologies and manage current BMS updates in a highly reciprocal and multi-functional environment. Spear’s battery management systems include various embedded software, hardware, and Windows based applications/utilities. This position will function as the design / development lead for Spear’s software and hardware release plans across multiple battery platforms.

General Responsibilities

  • Handles the software systems development function, including the design, development, troubleshooting, and debugging of software programs for software enhancements and new products including cloud-based or internet-related tools

  • Supervises the development of software and software tools used for design, infrastructure, and platforms, including operating systems, compilers, routers, networks, utilities, and databases

  • Supervises the hardware compatibility and/or hardware design

Experience / Qualifications

  • A university degree required (i.e. Bachelors degree) with at least 5 or more years of experience, or equivalent relevant work experience of at least 9 or more years.

  • Ability to lead, coach, and develop team members

  • Holds self and others accountable to achieving goals and standards

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to handle multiple competing tasks and demands

  • Strong communication skills; oral, written and presentation

  • Strong organization, planning and time management skills to achieve results

  • Strong personal and professional ethical values and integrity

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)

  • Strong interpersonal & collaboration skills to work effectively with all levels of the organization including suppliers and/or external customers

Other Responsibilities:

  • Drive development & implementation of BMS Product Roadmaps including Software Release Plans

  • Drive software and hardware engineering team integration.

  • Drive development and implementation of updated BMS functionality.

  • Design state-of-the-art feedback control and estimation algorithms using cell and battery pack models, customer data, and test data.

  • Define system-level requirements for battery management systems.

  • Design & layout of printed circuit board assemblies.

  • Design estimation algorithms and software development for SOC, SOH & SOP.

  • Develop code for embedded battery management systems.

  • Develop and conduct testing for embedded firmware.

  • Define, develop, and test PC-based user interfaces for embedded systems.

  • Define, develop, and test cloud-based remote monitoring for distributed devices.

  • Participate as part of a cross functional team in Deign Failure Mode Effects (and Criticality) Analysis, Root Cause Investigations, Functional Safety, and similar processes.

  • Support customer integration and commissioning via teleconference and in-person.

  • Support system-level integration testing of battery systems.

  • Support development of and comply with coding standards.

  • Support software development tools such as integrated development environments, the source control repository, and the issue tracking system.

  • Maintain proper configuration control of software.

Other Competencies:

  • Supports ISO 9001:2008 / AS9100 quality system.

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded system firmware development and testing required.

  • 5+ years Printed Circuit Board Design & Layout.

  • 3+ years leading engineering product development teams.

  • Experience with safety critical software development processes.

  • Experience with software design, requirements, and test plan development.

  • Experience with networked multi-processor systems.

  • Experience with Altium Designer.

  • Experience with ARM-M cores (Freescale preferred.)

  • Experience with embedded software development languages (C preferred.)

  • Experience with object-oriented PC programming concepts and languages (Java, C++, J2EE, .NET, C, C#, or PL/SQL) preferred.

  • Experience with lithium-ion battery BMS systems preferred.

  • Experience crating low-level drivers, and APIs.

Travel Requirements:

Travel can be expected domestically and internationally, at times for extended durations. Travel is estimated not to exceed 25% of the time.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence required to support government contracts.

Physical Requirements:

This position is largely sedentary with lifting requirements of less than 50 lbs.
