Sensata Technologies, Inc. NPD Quality Engineer in Carpinteria, California

The NPD Quality Engineer manages all Quality aspects of new product development, by influencing the customer, the Sensata development team (Design, Process, Program Management, etc.), and the Sensata Manufacturing team. The goal of the NPD Quality Engineer is to achieve flawless execution of product development. A successful NPD Quality Engineer possesses the following strengths: ability to provide direction, pro-active, results oriented, follow-through, the ability to influence others, a technical understanding of Sensata’s products, an understanding of manufacturing processes, and the motivation and ability to autonomously reach across geographical and cultural boundaries to solve problems.


General Responsibilities

  • Analyze, solve and control complex production quality problems on time to meet the customer requirements

  • Handles Production Part Approval Process and provide documents to customer

  • Conducts measurement system analysis and statistical process control for key processes

  • Ensures a smooth and timely launch of new and changed products

  • Handles customer returns and uses Sensata tools to provide frequent status updates to affected customers

  • Works effectively with test, design, product and planning engineers, regional quality engineers, regional planners, regional technical sales representatives and marketing representatives to solve customer challenges and provide answers

  • Coordinates project teams to ensure a successful launch of new products. It should be made clear what the customer expects and in detail elaborated how this can be achieved. After this process monitoring should take place on correct implementation

  • Initiating improvement proposals serving cost of quality, turnaround time and quality of production

  • May partner with line quality engineers and management teams in Layered Process Audits and internal audits. These audits ensure that manufacturing practices are followed

  • Train and manage technicians and inspectors to make sure corrective actions implemented and operators follow-up

  • Establish and follow procedure for control on non-conforming parts in production

  • Handles all aspects of quality and continuous improvement across various customer groups

  • Initiate improvement proposals serving cost of quality, turnaround time and quality of production

  • Assisting clients during audits with the aim to come to a production release

  • Demonstrate full ownership of product quality by driving all relevant functions towards 100% robustness in meeting specifications/performance requirements

  • Facilitate risk management process in compliance to appropriate external standards and corporate policies

  • Develop a customer satisfaction plan. Turn "voice of the customer" into user needs and quality goals

  • Develop a strategy to manage specific customer accounts

  • Handles customer quality issue resolution

  • Work with customers to understand their specific requirements and then draft plans to fully satisfy their requirements

  • Perform risk assessments

  • Set quality goals and improvement plans

  • Document and work with lessons learned

  • Review Control Plans and improve as needed

  • Develop a customer satisfaction plan

  • Work with Production sites to drive manufacturing improvements

  • Analyze data to identify concerns and respond to customers

  • Perform warranty analysis and identify trends

  • Strong Communication and social skills in order to be the intermediary between our clients and our production plants particular in Bulgaria, Mexico, Malaysia and China

  • Develop corrective action management for customer issues

Experience / Qualifications

  • A university degree and 4-6 years of experience (i.e. Bachelors degree) or a graduate degree and 2-4 years of experience (i.e. Masters degree) or a higher level degree and 0-2 years of experience (i.e. Doctorate degree)

  • Must be a team player able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing tasks and demands

  • Strong communication skills; oral, written and presentation

  • Strong organization, planning and time management skills to achieve results

  • Strong personal and professional ethical values and integrity

  • Holds self-accountable to achieving goals and standards

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)

  • Strong interpersonal & collaboration skills to work effectively with all levels of the organization including suppliers and/or external customers



  • Deploy Quality policy, objectives and goals within cross-functional teams

  • Assure quality systems are current and accurate

  • Ensure globally consistent use of the Sensata NPD process to drive results

  • Drive continuous improvement of the Sensata NPD process by supporting design of quality management system

  • Develop and deliver standard global training for Sensata's Quality Academy

  • Contribute ideas to product improvement roadmaps based on lessons learned & best practices (including industry standards ASTM, ISO, CQI, etc.) by facilitating kaizen and lean initiatives

  • Review customer quality agreements and requirements for deployment within APQP process

  • Review requirements and translate to operational controls and instructions (including reinspection, rework and containment)

  • Audit engineering and project management work products for clarity, completeness and compliance

  • Demonstrate full ownership of product quality by driving all relevant functions towards 100% robustness in meeting specifications/performance requirements

  • Assure compliance to defined operational controls and instructions

  • Develop and execute zero defect roadmaps with support from cross-functional teams and subject matter experts

  • Fulfill our customers' Quality System requirements (APQP, VDA, etc.)

  • Evaluate changes and deviations for risk and implementation of lessons learned & best practices

  • Manage deviations with customers during APQP including development and maintenance of pedigree matrix

  • Define and develop special characteristics in collaboration with customers, engineering and operations

  • Ensure product success by assessing design, process and suppliers against customer and Sensata requirements throughout NPD

  • Direct and participate in 8D activities including coordination of containment activity, failure analysis and problem solving (before and including C-sample build)

  • Assure quality and timeliness of 8D responses to customers

  • SME support for product after launch control

  • Coordinate MSA studies and capability studies to feedback feasibility assessments of new product and processes to engineering teams and management

  • Coordinate failure analysis and teardown of devices to provide feedback to engineering teams and management


  • B. S. degree or above, majoring in Engineering or other equivalent ones.

  • Ideally a minimum of 3 Years of working experience in quality functions, and good knowledge of Quality Systems (ISO 9000 / TS16949 / VDA 6.3).

  • Be familiar with quality management and manufacturing processes; also familiar with AIAG manual: APQP, FMEA, MSA, PPAP and SPC a plus. Experience in process / product engineering is a plus.

  • Be familiar with core quality tools such as SPC/MSA/PFMEA/PPAP/APQP

  • Strong communication skills and history of influencing at all levels of an organization. Negotiation skills.

  • Ability to develop unique, differentiated solutions to complex problems strong problem solving skills (8D/5Why/Fishbone/Minitab)

  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing.

  • Good English language ability in reading, writing and speaking.

  • Customer satisfaction handling experience and knowledge on automotive industries

  • At least 3 years’ experience in quality function and good knowledge on Quality Systems

  • Certified Quality Systems or TS 16949 internal auditor

  • Program management, and Design or Process Engineering experience is preferred.

  • Abundant assembly/function test/customer service experience is preferred.

  • Certified VDA auditor

  • 6 Sigma Green Belt or above

  • Experience with automotive / off-road industry

  • Experience with common Quality tools: DFM, GD&T, APQP, FMEA, control plan, and 8D.
