Sensata Technologies, Inc., is a leading global supplier of advanced operator controls for the heavy vehicle, off-road vehicle, and motorcycle markets. We are looking for a Design Engineering Director for our fast growing, $130M+ Operator Sensing Technologies (OST) business.

Our products help to simplify operation, increase reliability, and improve productivity in a broad range of applications. Core products include vehicle electronic control systems, electronic joysticks, multi-function grips, and handlebar-mounted controls.

Responsibilities include overall leadership of engineering team, management of design and product development, resource planning (people, capital and expenses), competitor benchmark, and technology trend tracking.

The ideal candidate has a strong track record of engineering success, preferably within vehicle industry (on road or off road). He/She will understand the regulatory environment, and be experienced in managing an engineering team combining mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines. Operationally, he/she will have a combination of business acumen in competitive technologies analysis, quality and return on investment. He/She needs to have experience in change management and lean design engineering to deliver improved performance and use critical thinking to prioritize business decisions.

Success in this position requires strong engineering know-how, ability to foster innovation, market understanding, and excellent team-building and influencing skills. This position reports the Global Engineering Director Operator Sensing Technologies (Attleboro, MA).

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with cross-functional teams including sales, marketing, product management team and the manufacturing site operations team to identify and execute on New Business Opportunity’s (NBO) that will drive profitable growth

  • Lead the engineering team through product development process and continuous improvement. Thrive in a fast-paced development environment with complex project attributes

  • Develop and execute a technology roadmap that drives a winning product portfolio

  • Understand and deliver to customer requirements and expectations

  • Bench mark competitors’ products and strategy

  • Must possess strengths to continue to develop the engineering organization by building effective teams, structures, and standardized processes that can support increase in business scales and complexity

  • People management and talent development of team members i.e. recruitment, retention, succession planning, performance improvement and employee relations

  • Define strategies to drive quality and lean engineering improvements

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of engineering leadership experience

  • BS/MS Electrical or Software Engineering required. MBA a plus

  • Strong Product design and development experience including electronics and embedded software. Experience with haptics, ergonomics and user interfaces are a plus

  • Self-driven, talent and team developer

  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, customer relationships, implement standardized processes and best practices

  • Excellent communication, collaboration and team building skills

  • Experienced with problem solving & process improvement tools such as: DMAIC, Shainin, Agile, Lean, etc.

  • Awareness of Design To Cost, Design for Manufacturability, Design of experiments, Functional understanding of advanced quality planning tools such as FMEA

  • Ability to work across all functions and levels of an organization; experience in a matrix environment preferred

  • 10-20% travel required
