Sensata Technologies, Inc. Plastics Engineering Intern in Attleboro, Massachusetts

Looking for a very “hands-on” intern to build a database of polymer testing results. Perform injection molding trials to produce test samples created from various resin types/grades. Run parametric studies looking at molding and material handling process settings to determine process limits for commonly used resins (Material drying, residence time, plastication, injection, cooling, etc.). Work with technicians and other engineers to perform polymer testing. Compile test data into searchable database to be used by design engineers. Create processing guides based on limits established with parametric study results. Also, opportunity to work with Subject Matter Experts in various disciplines, and study how mold processing affects areas such as laser welding, over-molding, insert-molding, etc.

Mold tensile specimens, both single and dual gated, in a vertical - horizontal injection molding press. Run a minimum of two high-heat materials at varied process conditions. Conditions to include under/over drying, under/over-temped melt, under/over-temped mold, varied injection speeds, and plastication extremes. The molded tensile specimens will then be tested after pre-conditioning. Pre-conditioning may be varied to include exposure to extreme temp and/or chemical environments. Samples will also be put through material analyses including DSC, FTIR, TGA, and capillary rheometer, all available onsite. After testing is complete, results will be compiled into a material database where templates will be created for all future work.

Deliverables:

  • Material characterization templates showing limits of processing conditions.

  • Minimum of two materials fully characterized.

  • Creation of molding processing guides for characterized materials.

  • All data entered into a materials database.

Qualifications :

  • Pursuing BS or MS degree in plastics engineering, or related discipline.

  • Hands-on lab experience installing injection molds, setting up processes on injection molding machines, and running auxiliary equipment such as dryers and mold temperature controllers.

  • Attended courses covering polymer testing including; DSC, FTIR, TGA, Capillary Rheometer, Tensile Testing, etc.

  • Attended courses covering part/mold design, CAE/FEA, and polymer structure relationships a plus.

  • Hands-on experience withSolidworks/ Moldflow /Moldexa plus.

  • Must be proficient with Excel, Word,Powerpoint.
